Sooo... here we were, driving along, minding our own business, and when what should fall in the street in front of us- a little baby squirrel! It plopped from about 20 feet above the street, flat onto it- face first. Took it a second to shake it off, but once it did, it got up and attempted to walk across the road. We quickly pulled over and our hero for this story, Andrew, jumped out and snatched him out from under some snobby lady's base model Lexus. We bring him in the car (once we see his Mommy is pancaked next to where he landed), and look at each other in awe. (I am quickly realizing everyday is going to be an adventure with Andrew- something ALWAYS happens to us and it is always something so out of the blue!) We decide to take him to our favorite playground to start his new life. We feed at least 20 squirrels everyday we are there- so we felt it was the best place to take him. We set him down- he jumps back into our hands. We set him down again and step back- he bounds back over to us and lands in our hands again... Uh oh... He finally spies a friend and chases him up a tree. The territorial squirrel attacks our little baby, grabs him by the neck, and tosses him back down the tree. Our little one screams in shock and pain and plops back on the ground- and all too familiar place at this point in his short little life. What else could we do?!? We scooped him up and proceeded to try one last drop off point. Off to PetSupermarket we went- asking about shelters or rehabs for baby squirrels. No luck. The strange part about the whole day, is that people we ran into all said they had a pet squirrel before and how tame and fun they were. So.... we decided to keep him. We named him Donnelley, from the street he landed upon, and bought a little bird cage and a few bags of different bird seeds and snacks. We soon came to find out that he prefers (and ONLY eats) our free GIANT box of Cheerios that we already had! He now has become our adored pet that both we and the kids love- making him little hammocks out of t-shirts and nests as well. Here's a few shots of our little adopted pet, Donnelley!
