Immigration Simulation

The second graders have been studying the immigration into Ellis Island these past few weeks. McKayleigh was given a new identity during her studies- Adelle, a 41 year old Russian immigrant with a limp that is bringing her stepdaughter along. She is going to be labeled with an "L" on her back and the teachers will be monitoring her to see if it is due to illness and she'll be denied entrance or just a limp and she is free to enter America. They all have their paperwork with their pictures and names on them to carry along, McKayleigh has an extra copy of a real Russian immigration document (go Mommy!), and they will close their studies with costumes from the era and either a side dish or dessert from another country. We are currently cooking corned beef (skipped the cabbage!) and working on the cane and limp. They have also taken their class studies into their specials classes- studying the works of Peter Max and creating their own Lady Liberty paintings. After all of this hands on learning, you KNOW these kids are going to retain the story of immigration into America! What a phenomenal school! More pictures after the party tomorrow!
